Creative and Critical Use of Big Data

Today big data is commonly used for optimization in industries such as ecommerce, social media, finance, transportation, telecommunication, and security. When data points link to one another, the whole generates better intelligence and more value than the sum of its parts. The extreme value generated by data networks is captured famously in Facebook’s Social Graph and Google’s Knowledge Graph. These proprietary graphs cause data asymmetry and feed the new generation of capital and power.

Data networks provide immense opportunities to civil society for exploring complex issues. Systematic resistance against systematic repression, and creativity is imperative for such contestation. In this talk, Burak Arıkan will present his recent artworks and discuss the Graph Commons platform for network mapping and analysis.

Burak Arikan is a New York and Istanbul based artist working with complex networks. He takes the obvious social, economical, and political issues as input and runs through an abstract machinery, which generates network maps and algorithmic interfaces, results in performances, and procreates predictions to render inherent power relationships visible and discussable. Arikan’s software, prints, installations, and performances have been featured in numerous exhibitions internationally. Arikan is the founder of Graph Commons collaborative network mapping platform.
